Moraira

February 24th, 2008

A charming small coastal town,it lies along the coast road to the north of Calpe. With an average of over 320 sunny days a year Moraira, is an all year round destination, with the beautiful marina, many shops and wonderful restaurants.

The town has two blue flag sandy beaches, one beside Moraira and the second along the coast road at El Portet that are ideal for family bathing and watersports.

Moraira is known as a centre of gastronomy on the Costa Blanca and has a number of fine international restaurants such as the “La Sort” in the port and the “Dauphin” in Portet that organize a Gourmet Festival in autumn with invited famous international chefs. Apart from this, of course you still have the fine traditional Valencia, Calpe, Alicante, Altean cuisine based on rice dishes such as Paella and Arroz a la Banda.

If you are lucky enough to be there in July, the Patron Saint is the Virgin of the Unsheltered and the Virgin of Carmen who is said to protect the sailors and fishermen. There is a beautiful parade and fireworks and a water procession with the statue of the Virgin floating among endless bouquets of flowers. Quite a scene to be seen!
